What are Sailor Moon Musicals?
These are musicals that are based on the Sailor Moon anime and manga.
Are they fan productions?
No, these are official productions done by Bandai. In fact, there are photos of Naoko Takeuchi with the cast of the musicals on the inside-back dust jackets of the original manga volumes 4 and 17. Takeuchi-sensei was also in attendance at the final day performance of Eien Densetsu (Kaiteiban).
When did they start?
The musicals began in 1993.
Are they still running?
The musicals were put on hiatus in January of 2005. The official statement from Bandai is that they are planning on bringing them back, but they don't know when.
How many people have played Sailor _____?
There have been 4 Sailor Moon's, 6 Sailor Mercury's, 8 Sailor Mars', 12 Sailor Jupiter's, 12 Sailor Venus', 4 Sailor Uranus', 8 Sailor Neptune's, 8 Sailor Pluto's, 9 Sailor Saturn's, 8 Tuxedo Kamen's, and 13 Sailor ChibiMoon's.
Why are the costumes so (flashy, bright, sparkly, gaudy)?
This is a stage show. A three-year-old in the back of the theatre needs to be able to tell who is who and what is going on.
Are the musicals like Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon?
No. The musicals started 11 years before the live action TV series. The hair color in the musicals is based on the anime and manga. However, Kawabe Chieco, who played Naru in PGSM was Sailor Mercury in the musicals from 2001 - 2002.
How many musicals are there?
Including Kaiteban's (Revised versions), there have been 29 musicals. Five of them (Gaiden Kaiteiban, Super Spring Festival, Henshin, Henshin Kaiteiban, SuperS Special Musical Show) were not released on video or DVD.
Did Naoko Takeuchi write the musicals?
No. The musicals have had four different script writers over the years. Tomita Sukehiro (1993 - 1994), Hiramitsu Takuya (1995 - 1998), Okumura Tatsuo (1999), and Saiki Junya (1999 - 2005). Saiki Junya also has been the director since 1999 and has been writing some of the song lyrics since 2000.
